The Mid-Autumn festival (Vietnamese name is Tết Trung Thu) is celebrated not only in Vietnam but also in some other parts of Asia as well, such as China, Japan or Korea.  Like its name, Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month on the lunar calendar with full moon at night. In Vietnam, Mid- Autumn festival is a special day has the purpose of bringing joy to the kids through the traditional customs and activities.

Children especially enjoy lanterns to increase the festive mood of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Traditional handmade lanterns are in paper and lit with candles. It is made from bamboo sticks and glittering colored-transparent papers. They believe that the sparkling light from the star symbolizes the purity and innocence, which are normally found in the children.

Vietnamese people believe lion dance symbolizes the luck, peace and success for everyone. On the night of Lunar August 15th, they will dance on the streets or go to houses. If accepted by the host, “the lion” will come in and start dancing as a wish of luck.

Traditional moon cake is a kind of rich pastry typically filled with mashed beans, salted egg yolk, lotus seed, salty paste with meat, lemon leaves or many other ingredients. Traditional mooncakes in Vietnam consist of two main types: square and circle. It is believed that the square represents the Earth, the circle represents the sky. As the cake is quite sweet, you might enjoy moon cake with a hot cup of green tea.
